Mobile phone use while driving can make you not so mobile!

The law surrounding mobile phone use while driving has become increasingly strict in recent years. It is an offence to hold and use a mobile phone or virtually any purpose while driving, including checking messages, making calls, taking photos, or interacting with apps.

Importantly, this applies even when a vehicle is stationary at traffic lights or in queuing traffic.

The penalties are significant:

– 6 penalty points

– a fine

– For newer drivers, those who incur six points or more for offences committed during the two-year probationary period after passing their driving test will have their licence revoked automatically and will only be able to drive after applying for a provisional licence pending the passing of a further test.

Incurring 12 or more penalty points means a minimum period of disqualification should be imposed. This is called a ‘totting up disqualification’. Therefore, two phone calls could result in a ban of up to 6 months depending on circumstances.
